Here's Why Aladdin Isn't Shirtless During 2019's Remake

Fans hoping to see Mena Massoud go shirtless in the live-action remake of Disney’s Aladdin are going to be upset to find out that he never actually strips down.

The animated movie of course features the title character wearing a vest with nothing underneath throughout some of the film’s iconic scenes.

Aladdin costume designer Michael Wilkinson opened up about the “question on everyone’s lips” during an interview with EW.

“For the same reason why we thought it wasn’t appropriate for Princess Jasmine to be flashing her belly button for half of the film, we also felt that once you make that leap from cartoon into live-action, you really have to make some adjustments,” he said. “We thought having so much skin showing on Aladdin for the whole film would be quite distracting on a human actor as opposed to a cartoon character.”

The movie is in theaters now and the soundtrack is online as well.

Mena Massoud Says Seeing 'Aladdin' For the First Time Was 'An Out of Body Experience'

Mena Massoud takes over the June/July 2019 cover of Daman magazine.

Here’s what the 27-year-old Aladdin actor had to say:

On the pressure to fill Aladdin’s shoes: “Pressure isn’t the right word. I feel a lot of responsibility but not pressure. I know Guy Ritchie and the studio spent a lot of time trying to find the right person and they wouldn’t have cast me if they didn’t feel like I was the guy. But I do feel a responsibility to not let fans of the original down.”

On the most memorable moments from filming: “We did a lot of incredible things on this film. I really got to sink my teeth into parkour and fitness and I absolutely loved that about it because it was an extension of my fitness routine that I already craved everyday. But also just the time I got to spend with such incredible artists like Guy, Will, Naomi and Jonathan our producer. I learned a lot from them and I genuinely enjoyed spending time with all of them.”

On seeing the film for the first time: “It was a bit of an out of body experience to be honest. I still haven’t seen the final cut but the one I saw was almost finished. I was very proud of everyone who put their hearts and souls into this film. Everyone on the team just really loved this project and I think it shows on screen. This film was made with a lot of passion and I’m so happy to have gotten to work with all of these incredible people.”

Aladdin is in theaters now.

Mena Massoud is filing a lawsuit against Tesla.

The 27-year-old Aladdin actor is suing the car company after his new Tesla Model 3, which had manufacturing and design defects, crashed into a tree, according to TMZ on Friday (May 31).

Mena Massoud Opens Up About Feeling Like An Outcast With 'Man About Town' Magazine

Mena Massoud goes shirtless on the new cover of Man About Town magazine.

Here’s what the 27-year-old Aladdin star shared:

On being boxed in on the roles he could get: “[I could] only audition for characters with ethnic names. I could never go in for character who were cool dudes, who fell in love with hot girls, like in Riverdale. There was no space. And I still think it’s a massive problem.”

On connecting with Aladdin: “[Aladdin] is a young man finding his way in the world. He’s trying to figure out his identity. When he meets a pretty girl and he thinks he’s not good enough…I grew up feeling like that. I also felt like an outcast. I went to a high school that didn’t have a lot of visibly ethnic people. I felt very different from everybody. And Aladdin is the same. […] I connected to that, because I knew I could bring my own experience to the role.”

On the diversity of Aladdin: “Everyone on screen is a person of colour and not only that, we’re all from very different places […] You know, I’m Egyptian-Canadian. Naomi is British-Indian. Marwan is Tunisian-Dutch. Navid [Negahban] is Iranian-American, but he also spent time in Germany. It’s all incredibly diverse and I hope people celebrate that.”

Mena Massoud Says He Hasn't Gotten An Audition Since Starring in 'Aladdin'

Despite starring in Aladdin, Mena Massoud actually hasn’t gotten an audition for a new role since the movie’s success.

Speaking with The Daily Beast, the 28-year-old actor opened up about how he’s still facing struggles despite Aladdin crossing the $1 billion mark.

“I’m kind of tired of staying quiet about it. I want people to know that it’s not always dandelions and roses when you’re doing something like Aladdin,” Mena shared. “‘He must have made millions. He must be getting all these offers.’ It’s none of those things. I haven’t had a single audition since Aladdin came out.”

He continues, “I feel like I’m going to be overlooked and underestimated for a long time because I am a young actor. I’m an up and comer in the sense that I’ve been doing this for 10 years, but to a lot of people, Aladdin’s the first thing they’ve seen me in. So I think I’m going to be viewed that way for a long time. I’m going to have to work at chipping away at that.”

Mena is starring in Hulu’s Reprisal series, but it’s a role he booked before Aladdin.

“It’s wild to a lot of people,” he adds. “People have these ideas in their head. It’s like, I’m sitting here being like, ‘OK, Aladdin just hit $1 billion. Can I at least get an audition?’ I’m not expecting you to be, like, ‘Here’s Batman.’ But can I just get in the room? Can you just give me a chance? So, it’s not always what you think.”

'Aladdin' Live-Action Sequel: Everything to Know Amid Spin-Off News for Billy Magnussen's Prince Anders

It was just announced that Billy Magnussen‘s Aladdin character Prince Anders has a spin-off movie in the works, but did you know that Disney is also planning a sequel to the live-action film?

Fans have been upset about Billy, the one white actor in a cast of diverse stars, getting his own movie as Aladdin star Mena Massoud recently said that he hasn’t landed any auditions since the movie came out.

Well, it sounds like Disney still loves Mena as he’s hinted that the sequel is a definite possibility. Reports have claimed that the sequel will follow animated sequel Return of Jafar, though that’s not yet confirmed.

“I don’t think it will be Return of Jafar, but I think there’s a possibility of a sequel, yes,” Mena told ET a couple months ago. “I think they should do one just about the animals. Like, Abu, Raja, Iago and the carpet all get together. Throwing it out there!”

Back in August, producer Dan Lin opened up about plans for a sequel.

“We’d love to,” he told SYFY Wire. “People clearly loved the movie and watched it multiple times and we get lots of fan letters and people asking us to make Return [of] Jafar, and I can just tell you that we’re in early stages right now, but we’re certainly talking about another movie. Like with Aladdin, it will not be a straight remake of any movie that’s been made before, so we’re looking at ‘where’s the best way to go with these characters.’”

Dan added, “we’d love to have [director] Guy [Ritchie] back and get the team back together. If we do another Aladdin movie, we’d certainly love to have him at the helm.”

In another interview a month later, Dan basically confirmed that Return of Jafar won’t be the basis for the sequel.

“We’re exploring lots of different ways that we can go but certainly, fans are saying, ‘we want to see more of these characters,’ but they want to see the next adventure,” he told Yahoo UK. “We’re talking now about where that could go but I don’t think it’s going to be a straight remake of The Return of Jafar.”

Mena Massoud Reveals Healthy Vegan 'Chickpea Salad' Recipe

Aladdin‘s Mena Massoud doesn’t describe himself as vegan or vegetarian but rather plant-based. He gets into why in his upcoming cookbook, Evolving Vegan, out September 15th.

“It’s not about labels, or eating habits or any of that crap,” the 28-year-old actor has said. “It’s about evolving in the right direction so that we can help save our planet, our bodies and our fellow living souls.”

Last year, Mena invested in the San Diego-based vegan restaurant Plant Power Fast Food. The fast-food chain serves vegan versions of popular American fast food menu items such as the “Big Zac”, obviously a play off of the McDonald’s Big Mac.

You can preorder Mena‘s cookbook through Amazon.com! In the meantime, Mena shared his favorite chickpea salad recipe with Just Jared readers. Check it out:
